Seventh Senedd Members' Commitment to the Welsh Language
With a brand new Senedd and more Members than ever before, there is an opportunity to increase the use of the Welsh Language in the Senedd, where it has historically been used far too little. In previous Seneddau, using Welsh often meant swimming against the tide in a sea of English. Now is the time to turn the tide in support of the Welsh language within the Senedd's administration.
We are calling for the Senedd Commission, the Independent Remuneration Board of the Senedd and Members themselves to be brought under the Welsh Language Standards as a matter of urgency, so that a robust legal framework is put in place.
In addition, we expect every individual Member, and the Members collectively, to show leadership in realising the vision of making Welsh the principal language of the Senedd. Members of the Seventh Senedd need to seize the opportunity to develop new practices in using Welsh, both spoken and written, in Senedd proceedings, when employing staff and when serving their constituents.
We therefore decided to contact all 96 Members of the Senedd and invite them to declare their current personal linguistic ability, as well as their commitments to using and promoting the Welsh language in their role as elected representatives. We intend this survey to be a live record, enabling us to hold Members accountable throughout this Senedd term.
We wrote to all Members on 22 May, 4 June and 23 June to give them every opportunity to respond, while making clear our intention to publish the results.

Dear Member of the Senedd,
I am writing to you as one of your constituents to ask you to respond to Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg's survey, so that your commitment, as one of my elected representatives, to using and promoting the Welsh language can be recorded.
As a constituent, I expect you, both as an individual Member and together with Members collectively, to demonstrate leadership in realising the vision of making Welsh the language of the Senedd. Members of the Seventh Senedd need to seize the opportunity to develop new habits in using Welsh, both spoken and written, in Senedd proceedings, when employing staff and when serving constituents.
I understand that Cymdeithas wrote to you several times over the course of a month between May and June 2026, inviting you to declare your commitment, but did not receive a response. I therefore ask you now to record your commitment by completing the form here, and to reply to my correspondence confirming that you have done so:
