Who can join Cymdeithas yr Iaith?

Anyone who supports the objectives of Cymdeithas yr Iaith can join!

✅ Welsh speakers and learners

Fluent speakers and individuals who are learning the language are equally welcome.

✅ Non-Welsh speaking people

It is not necessary that you speak Welsh to support us (but note that we operate through the medium of Welsh).

✅ People outside Wales

Supporters who live in other areas of the UK or around the world can join.

✅ Community activists, allies and supporters

Whether you are passionate about education, housing, the media, climate justice, or community development, there is a place for you.

If you want to be part of securing the future of the Welsh language and our communities and want to be part of an organisation that fights for social and linguistic justice, you can – and you should – join Cymdeithas yr Iaith!

Where does your money go?

Our members are an essential part of maintaining our aim to promote and ensure the future of the Welsh language as a community language in all parts of Wales. Unlike many organisations, we operate without government grants or external financial support, relying entirely on the generosity of our members and supporters.

Community Engagement: Membership fees support grassroots activities, including local meetings, workshops and events.

Operational Costs: Contributions help cover essential operational costs, such as employing full-time staff, maintaining communication channels, running campaigns and supporting members who are an integral part of our activities.

Independence and Integrity: By relying entirely on members' contributions, we maintain our independence, allowing us to campaign for the Welsh language and our communities and hold organisations accountable without external influence as part of that.

Member benefits:

  • Be part of an active community

  • Get access to our magazine 'Y Tafod'

  • You can vote at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on proposed decisions and voice your opinion on decisions that will influence the direction of our work in the coming year.

What can you do as a member?

Members guide the work of Cymdeithas. So in order to ensure that Cymdeithas yr Iaith's campaigns are successful and effective, we need the help of our members.

Every contribution is important and helps the organisation to reach its goal! You can help in a number of different ways:

  • by getting involved with one of the campaigning groups: Rights to the Welsh Language, Sustainable Communities, Digital Futures, Education, Health – from organising events to drawing up policy documents

  • by being part of the work of regions or local groups

  • by helping organise gigs or other events

  • by helping with fundraising

  • by designing and creating videos and images

  • by helping with administrative tasks such as translation and proofreading

  • by taking direct action

and much more!

We always appreciate help from people with expertise in different fields (e.g. lawyers, designers).

If you think you can help in any way, please indicate so on the membership form.
