Cymdeithas yr Iaith is surprised at Carmarthenshire County Council's decision to publish Statutory Notices to Close Ysgol Meidrim and Ysgol y Fro as this will undermine the new government's commitment to building rural resilience.
In Meidrim's case, an opportunity was missed to collaborate with the school's governors on an exciting plan to build a community hub alongside a school and start using our schools to revitalise Welsh-speaking rural communities. In the case of Ysgol y Fro Llangyndeyrn, this has again reduced capacity for Welsh language education in the Carmarthen town area, which could mean losing a number of pupils to English education.
Ffred Ffransis said on behalf of the Carmarthen region Cymdeithas yr Iaith:
"Cymdeithas will work with the governors of both schools to collect objections to the Statutory Notices to Close the schools before the final decisions in the autumn. We also ask the government to intervene so that a commitment to rural resilience is not meaningless in practice."
