Ahead of Carmarthenshire Council's Cabinet meeting next Monday morning (1/6/26) to discuss a proposal to publish a Statutory Notice to close Ysgol Meidrim, the Carmarthenshire region of Cymdeithas yr Iaith has called on the council "to turn a new leaf".
In the letter the Carmarthenshire region states that there is no good reason for closing the school - there will be little to no savings, the school is not failing, the educational standard of the school is constantly improving and it is a school that offers a safe and welcoming place for children. The letter encourages councilors to turn over a new leaf and work with the school's governors on a plan presented by the governors.
The letter says:
"Your responsibility is significant in terms of this community and in terms of trust in the consultation processes. There is another option available to you apart from the negative recommendation of closing the school. You could decide to choose a path of working together... with the community, the Council (led by the Department of Education) and Government for the benefit of rural Wales."
The letter also warns that 20 other schools in the county could be at risk if a school as strong as Ysgol Meidrim was under threat.
