Mynyddcerrig a Done Deal!

Ysgol MynyddcerrigThe future of the Welsh-medium Primary School at Mynyddcerrig will be before the Executive Board of Carmarthenshire County Council for the final time tomorrow morning (10am Tuesday 9th January).

Members will be discussing a final recommendation by Officers that the Closure Notice of the School should be confirmed after which the issue will have to be referred to Welsh Minister for Education, Jane Davidson, as a result of the objections to the notice. This follows rallies and protests at County Hall – including the dumping of two tons of stones (mynydd o gerrig) outside the Council HQ – protests in the village including the blockading of the car of Council Officers into the school car park, and dozens of lengthy written objections as part of the Consultation Process.Acting Cymdeithas Dyfed Organiser, Gwenno Teifi, commented:"The truth of the matter is to be found in the final sentence of the Officers' report to the Executive Board tomorrow. Under the heading 'Physical Assets', they admit 'A capital receipt from the sale of this school is included in the funding package for the MEP program.' In other words, they have already budgeted for the closure and sale of the school to part-fund their plans for centralised schools even before starting the so-called consultation over the future of Ysgol Mynyddcerrig.""This shows that the whole consultation was a farce. It was always a Done Deal from their point of view. The united opposition of parents, governors and the local community made no difference to them, the views of a neighbouring school - Bancffosfelen - made no difference, and members of the Executive Board took less than 30 seconds in their September meeting to discount the dozens of positive contributions to the Consultation Process.""Tomorrow, these same members will probably take even less time to dismiss all the objections to the Statutory Notice. Once again, they do not deem the future of this school and community to be worthy of discussion by the Full Council. The Executive Board and Education Officers feel that they can get away with anything now.""The moment of truth will now come for Jane Davidson. Either she will rubber-stamp the Council's Done Deal and totally undermine any trust in consultation processes thereby increasing apathy among parents and governors. Or she will uphold the appeal and demand that the Council acts in partnership with governors, parents and teachers rather than treat them with disdain."
