Members quizz Alun Pugh in the Language Forum

alun_pugh.jpgMembers of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg quizzed Culture Minister Alun Pugh at the Welsh language Forum in Swansea last night. During the period of consultation by the government regarding the pulling in of the Welsh Language Board, members called for a new Welsh language act, and drew the minister’s attention to the New Welsh Language Act Festival in Aberystwyth on June the 10th.

Amongst the members questioning Alun Pugh was Hywel Griffiths, Cymdeithas yr Iaith’s vice chair of campaigns:"We asked Alun Pugh why he does not see the need for new legislation in the field of the Welsh language considering the fact that creating the Welsh Language Board is an integral part of the Welsh language act of 1993. If you look at legislation in all other fields of equality, one can see the principle of establishing rights. Whilst Alun Pugh continues to refuse to discuss the rights of the people of Wales to the Welsh language, he is neglecting the basic rights of everyone in Wales."The members also invited Alun Pugh to the New Welsh Language Act Festival on June the 10th in Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Leader of the opposition Ieuan Wyn Jones, representatives of organisations, famous poets and bands will be present in the rally and Professor Hywel Teifi Edwards will lead an appreciation of Eileen Beasley’s contribution to Welsh life.
