Cymdeithas anger at school closure plan

Cadwn Ein Hysgolion.JPGCymdeithas yr Iaith have reacted with anger and dismay to Carmarthenshire County Council surprise announcement to begin immediate consultation over the future of the schools of Mynyddcerrig and New Inn. New Inn is a school that was not even on the council's hit-least of 40 schools for closure, and consultation was not intended to start on Mynyddcerrig school for another year.

Angharad Clwyd, Cymdeithas Dyfed Field Officer said:"The council are obviously trying to pick off what they feel are the weakest schools and communities in the most cynical way. They deliberately sit on their hands when village schools face problems. When a small school faces additional financial burdens because a teacher is ill or absent, they do nothing to help. They leave the small schools to face the burden entirely themselves.""Ysgol Mynyddcerrig are to be commended for having turned the school around into an educational success, having come out of 'Special Measures' their reward by a cynical council is now closure.""As Carmarthenshire County Council, unlike Cardiff, are refusing to let the people discuss the overall strategy of mass school closures, we call on everyone now to support each individual school which is threatened where it is contrary to the wishes of parents and Governors.""Schools like Ysgol Mynyddcerrig are now in the front line and carry the hope of dozens of our Welsh speaking communities. They deserve our support."
