Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg have strongly criticized today's announcement by Culture Minister Alun Pugh, that he is in consultation with 59 organisations in Wales regarding adopting a Welsh language policy.
Dafydd Morgan Lewis said on behalf of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg:"What we have here are 59 excuses for not introducing a Welsh Language Act. It's quite obvious, that Alun Pugh, on the threshold of the National Assembly elections is trying to dupe the people of Wales that the Labour Party is taking the Welsh language seriously. It is quite obvious to all of us by now that the Labour Party's commitment to the Welsh language is far weaker than that of the main opposition parties, and this announcement is a disgraceful attempt to misslead the public.""The Labour Party will have to declare its unconditional support to a New Language Act giving the Welsh language official status before the Labour Party can be taken seriously on matters such as the Welsh language."
