Cymdeithas yr Iaith have accused Carmarthenshire County Council of being profeteering vandals in response to the shock news that they wish to demolish Mynyddcerrig school which was only closed a month ago. The Council have applied for planning permission to develop 6 houses on the site.
Cymdeithas Chair in Carmarthenshire, Sioned Elin said:"We are now witnessing the farce of the Council giving itself planning permission with the sole purpose of increasing the value of the land in a profeteering excercise. Like the true vandals they are, they are destroying a valuable community resource and the extra housing can only form a part of the transformation of Mynyddcerrig into a dormitary village. Another Welsh-speaking community will have been dealt a final blow.""Cymdeithas warned from the start that the Council's intention was to make as much profit as possible as soon as possible from the sites of closed schools. This shows how cynical and untrue were the promises of Council officals and members that the local community would have first choice on using the school.""We shall be calling on the Welsh Assembly Government's Rural Affairs Ministry to take over buildings like this and ensure a proper community use for them."
