New Welsh language Act given centre stage at AGM - Condemning the WRU

Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Cymdeithas yr Iaith 2008The campaign for a New Welsh Language Act will be given pride of place in Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg's AGM which will be held at Canolfan Morlan, Aberystwyth, this Saturday, February 2 between 10am and 3.30pm. The International Rugby match at Twickenham between England and Wales will start shortly after the end of the AGM at 4pm.

Detailed AGM Timetable available here.Dafydd Morgan Lewis, Administrative Officer for Cymdeithas yr IaithGymraeg said""Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg intend to send a letter from the AGM to the officials of the WRU condemning their lack of commitment to the Welsh language. Our main concern is that no use is made of Welsh on the WRU's official website, although there are many other language issues that are also a cause for concern.""What makes the situation intolerable is that Rugby Union is one of the few examples of where Wales as a nation is represented on an international level. One would expect therefore to see the Welsh language respected.""We would expect the WRU to make a far greater effort on behalf of the language, and unless there is a change of heart on this issue, then the WRU is likely to become one of our major targets in the near future."The main motions in the AGM relating to A New Welsh Language Act will be calling:1. on the Assembly Government to introduce a New Welsh Language Act2. that the private sector, including companies such as Morrisons, Orange, Abbey, Boots and Brains should be included in a New Welsh language Act.3. on the Health Minister to make sure that a comprehensive Welsh language service is an integral part of the NHS, that the National Health Service needs to show greater awareness of the Welsh language and that the privatisation we have witnessed in the service has led to further Anglicisation.
