S4C: Minister ignores every political party in Wales

Llundain Hunt.jpgLanguage campaigners have responded furiously to UK Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt's refusal to conduct a review of S4C.A few weeks ago, all four main political parties in Wales wrote to the Prime Minister David Cameron asking for a 'comprehensive audit' of the channel. Menna Machreth, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg's broadcasting spokesperson said:"It's incredible that Jeremy Hunt is trying to treat Welsh democracy in this way. He didn't consult anyone from Wales about his last-minute plan for the BBC to takeover the channel, now he's ignoring every political party leader in Wales. It's an insult."All we're asking for is a sensible timetable to discuss S4C, but Jeremy Hunt has no plan for that which shows how little he cares about giving the channel a future. I'm sure people will have been enraged that he's got the impudence to treat Wales with so much disrespect.""It's clearer now that some politicians have been using the request for members of the S4C Authority to resign to distract attention away from the Westminster Government's plans to destroy our only Welsh language channel. What would happen if all the members went? Would Jeremy Hunt the man who's cut the government grant to S4C 94% have the right to appoint his own poodles? Wouldn't that endanger the channel's political independence?"S4C is facing real terms cuts of over 40%, being taken over by the BBC, with slash-and-burn S4C faces real term cuts of over 40% to its funding, a BBC takeover and slash-and-burn powers in the hands of the Ministers in Westminster. We shouldn't let the debate about individuals distract from the real threats, namely the Westminster Government's plans. ""S4C must be taken out of the Public Bodies Bill. We as campaigners are calling for managerial independence and complete editorial independence without interference from the BBC or the Government. An independent funding formula for the Welsh language channel, based on inflation, is also essential to ensure fair funding to create Welsh language programmes of a high standard. We acknowledge that the channel could perform better - that's why we are campaigning for a new S4C, but that won't be possible under these plans."
