Dyfed Field Officer for Cymdeithas yr Iaith , Angharad Clwyd, will tell a public meeting organised by the local community at Waungilwen tonight, that we are in danger of losing our Welsh speaking communities bit by bit.
Local villagers have organised a Public Meeting at Neuadd y Ddraig Goch, Drefach Velindre, to oppose the application for planning permission to build houses in the village of Waungilwen. Addressing the meeting, Angharad Clwyd will say:"There is a clash of values here. The local community sees house as homes, whereas the developers see them as resources to make profit. As a result they are continuously trying to maximise their assets by a drip drip strategy.""Cymdeithas yr Iaith sees the need for affordable housing in many communities, but in this case we call on the County Council to be brave enough to oppose this application because of the flooding problem in the village. Covering these fields in concrete will obviously add a great deal to the flooding problem. Permitting this application will therefore contradict the Council's own corporate aim of ensuring sustainable communities, by creating a situation of endangering a community by adding to these problems. Last week's experience has underlined the fact that it would be unwise to go against this aim.""The problem facing the people of Carmarthenshire is that they don't oppose County Plans, only specific developments. A new Plan will be enforced in 2011,the Local Development Plan, instead of the Unitary Development Plan. We will press the County Council to consult with every village on the contents of this plan.
