Divide & Rule in Carmarthenshire

Cadwn Ein Hysgolion.JPGCymdeithas yr Iaith (The Welsh Language Society) has accused Carmarthen's Education Officers of adopting a cynical 'Divide & Rule' attitude in their mission to close Welsh-medium village schools and create bureaucratic centralised education.

In the written response to the County Council's Consultation Document over the future of Llansadwrn Village School, Cymdeithas point out that yet again the future of one school is being discussed in isolation from surrounding schools.Cymdeithas yr Iaith Education spokesperson, Ffred Ffransis explains:"Last Year, the Council singled out Mynyddcerrig as a target but delayed discussing the future of nearby Bancffosfelen until 2 years later to make the development of constructive alternatives to closure, such as federating neighbouring schools, more difficult. They are now at it again; discussing the future of Ysgol Llansadwrn while waiting for a further 2 years to discuss the future of adjacent schools so as to avoid united opposition to their plans.""The Council obviously feels that it can best achieve its aim of closing down our Welsh-medium Village Schools through the domino effect. They have singled out isolated schools which were perceived as easier targets hoping to force through closures and also demoralise the surrounding schools into surrender.""The Council have seriously misjudged however the mood of governors, parents and the local community at both Mynyddcerrig and Llansadwrn. We call on everyone to fully support these 2 small schools in their stand against a cynical Authority which has been plotting against them."All responses to the consultation over the future of Ysgol Llansadwrn have to be with the Council's Education Officer before Monday 5th of February.
