Archdruid petitions for Welsh Record in Assembly

cyflwyno-deiseb-cofnod-hyd-2011.jpgWales' Archdruid T.James Jones and former AM Owen John Thomas presented a 1,500 strong petition calling for a fully bilingual version of the Assembly's Record of Proceedings, or Cofnod today. As the Assembly consults on it's Official Language Bill, campaigners will call for certainty on the face of the legislation that the full Record of Assembly Proceedings, or Cofnod, is available in Welsh. The Bill as drafted exempts the Assembly from any responsibility to provide documents in Welsh, with providion depending on the contents of its language plan. The Cofnod was available bilingually from the Assembly's inception in 1999 until 2009, and the Welsh Language Board has concluded that the Assembly is breaking the law at the moment by failing to provide a fully Welsh language version. The Archdruid of Wales T. James Jones commented:"I support Cymdeithas yr Iaith's petition as a member of the British Isle's Gorsedd of Bards. The Gorsedd's objective is to promote, foster and support the use of the Welsh language in the life and work of the nation. I believe this aim fits with this petition's intention. For the language to prosper, it must have the same statutory status as English. That's why the Assembly Cofnod should be bilingual, with certainty in statute through the proposed Bill."Catrin Dafydd, a Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg spokesperson added:"If politicians in our Assembly are serious about making Welsh central to the work of the body, then securing in statute a Welsh language record of their proceedings is a very basic demand. It raises the question: why have officials drafted a Bill which exempts the Assembly from having to provide such an important document bilingually? Changing this bill is the only way to ensure we don't need to run this campaign over and over again. The matter will then be settled. Every organisation and company in Wales looks to our politicians in Cardiff for leadership on the language, if they can't deliver that on our behalf, then Welsh will suffer in every aspect of life."
