At 1 o' clock this afternoon Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg brought a 3 hour demonstration outside the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay to an end. The demonstrators were demanding that any Language Act agreed on as part of coalition discussions should be a full and comprehensive one.
A banner had been displayed saying 'A WEAK Language Act - No Thanks' and leaflets outlining the demands of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg were distributed. The demonstrators also met Ieuan Wyn Jones and Nick Bourne to discuss the matter. Mike German and Rhodri Morgan also received hand delivered letters. In the letters Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg emphasises that a language Act should include a commitment to official status, establish the post of Language Commissioner and ensure that Welsh citizens have the right to see and use the language in all aspects of life and in every sector. The demonstration was led by Gwenno Teifi, who was sent to prison last year for her part in the Language Act campaign. She faces a further court case for her part in the same campaign on July 9th.Hywel Griffiths, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith said:"The recent shocking attitude of Thomas Cook has shown that new legislation is the only way ahead."
