Welsh language campaigners have criticised the BBC's decision to pull out of a major children's festival, the Urdd Eisteddfod, taking place in Swansea this year. The annual Urdd Eisteddfod is Europe's largest competitive youth festival, but for the first time in years the BBC will not have a stand for families flocking to the event.Bethan Williams, Chair of language campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, said that the BBC's decision was a worrying sign:"On top of spending less on Welsh language television, getting rid of a Welsh language website, this decision by the BBC shows where the wind is blowing. Wales's culture is not safe in their hands. Obviously, this Welsh language children's event in Swansea is not important to them. Are more decisions like this on the way? Will the BBC feel that they don't have to support any Welsh events once they have taken over S4C?"Under a deal between the UK Government and the BBC, there will significant cuts to S4C's budget and the BBC will takeover the channel. A protest is being organised outside the Carmarthen offices of the BBC this Saturday, Bethan Williams added:"We need a body that's completely independent which will make the Welsh language a priority, one of the main reasons S4C was established in the first place. But under the joint plan between the BBC and the government in London, the channel's independence will go competely - it will be a department of the BBC, with 40% less money, and facing Ministers in London with new powers to abolish the channel completely."However, there's still hope, our campaign to save S4C is gaining momentum, a lot of young people have organised a protest in Carmarthen this Saturday. With even more support, we can win this battle with the BBC and the Govenrment whose plans would destroy S4C. Let's hope they'll also reconsider their decision to pull out of the Urdd Eisteddfod."
