Campaigners called on BBC bosses to pull out of their cuts deal with Government, as they began a camp outside studios in north Wales today (Monday, 20th June) over the future of broadcasting.A dozen Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Society) members started camping outside the BBC's Bryn Meirion site near Bangor University at about eight o'clock this morning. The protestors say they are acting to demonstrate their fears over the effects of the cuts agreed by BBC management in London and the UK Government on the media in Wales. In an email to BBC Director General, Mark Thompson, they say:"The media in Wales is under threat because of the cuts to S4C and to BBC Wales...We call on the BBC management in London to pull out of their deal with the Westminster Government to merge S4C with the BBC. There is a wide consensus in Wales that these plans are wrong ... Tens of thousands of people have opposed these plans including the Archbishop of Wales and the Welsh party leaders."Last autumn, the BBC agreed to takeover funding S4C as part of a deal which means cutting the channel's budget by over forty percent in real terms. The corporation in London also asked BBC Wales to cut twenty percent from its budget. According to reports in the press, closing the broadcaster's studio in Bangor is one of the options being considered.Menna Machreth, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg's broadcasting spokesperson said:"Following March's referendum, there needs to be a new vision for all the media in Wales, not cutting the few services we have at the moment. We are here to give a clear message to the BBC management in London - it's not cuts that are needed but a strategt and clear ideas for a prosperous future for broadcasting here in Wales. We're not willing to accept a reduction in services like Radio Cymru, S4C and BBC Wales in general - services which are so important to the country."Osian Jones from Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg added:"The BBC has made a deal with Westminster Government to takeover S4C, and as a result S4C is losing its independence as a channel. Speaking to our members, Mark Thompson said he couldn't guarantee that there would be any money for S4C after 2015. Between the cuts to S4C and Radio Cymru, Welsh language broadcasting is being hit hard."Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg is calling for a new vision for the future of the media in Wales including BBC Wales. We are calling for an independent S4C with enough money - we need certainty of funding in law so to avoid tensions between the Welsh and English languages."
