Chief Executive Misleads Campaigners and Parents on School Future?

Mark JamesCymdeithas yr Iaith have challenged Carmarthenshire County Council's Chief Executive, Mark James to come clean on whether he misled campaigners as he tried to explain away the fact that the council's executive board had not even bothered to discuss the future of ysgol mynyddcerrig school at their meeting on the 20th of September.

He addressed parents and supporters in the public gallery at the end of the meeting and said that the reason there had been no discussion in the Executive Board meeting that day on the intention to serve a notice of statutory closure on the school, was that the matter would have to be thoroughly discussed at a meeting of full council before coming to a final decision.Cymdeithas contacted Ann MacGregor from the Schools Management Division departement of the Welsh Assembly Government, because we needed confirmation of what the Chief Executive had said. In her email dated the 7th of November she states that:"it would be unusual for a proposal (to close a school) to go back to full Council or even to Cabinet (Executive Board) for consideration at the end of the objection period: one would expect them to have taken account of dissenting views during the consultation phase and to have balanced all the arguments for and against a proposal before deciding to publish."In our letter to Mark James we say:"It seems therefore that this meeting of the Executive Board on the 20th of September was the only opportunity to discuss the statutory notice to close Ysgol Mynyddcerrig and its unbelievable that the Executive Board did not even think it was important enough for a minute's discussion.""Are you now willing to acknowledge that you misled us, and indeed the Councillors, at this point? Would you also confirm that the matter will not be discussed in the full council meeting on December 13th"The letter was signed by Cymdeithas' Dyfed Field officer an parentsfrom Ysgol Mynyddcerrig:Angharad Clwyd - Dyfed Field Officer - Cymdeithas yr IaithMr Matt Dix: Parent/Governor Ysgol MynyddcerrigDr Tony Mathews: Parent Ysgol MynyddcerrigMr John Griffiths: Parent Ysgol Mynyddcerrig
