Carmarthenshire County Council have contacted the staff and Governors of Ysgol Mynyddcerrig village school today to advise them that the school will close for the last time at the end of the summer term this year.
Angarad Clwyd, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg's Dyfed field officer said:"It is obvious that Jane Davidson has speeded up the process towards closure because she has sent her decision to the County Council even before responding to the letters of opposition from the parents and governors. Notification of her decision was sent on the last possible day to enable the Council to close the school at the end of the summer term. The timing, on the last day of term when there were no children at the school, is also obviously convenient for the County Council to avoid any possible protests by parents and governors. This decision will rip the heart out of the community of Mynyddcerrig."The Council officials will be sending out letters to the parents and to everybody who has opposed before the end of the day, to reach them during the Easter holiday. Ms. Clwyd added:"Ms Davidson has not upheld the appeal of a single village school which has faced closure. This process is a complete farce and the consultation process is also farcical. It is obvious to everybody that the decision to close the school was taken months ago.""The people of Carmarthenshire have lost all faith in Jane Davidson and in the Labour/Independent cabinet of Carmarthenshire County Council. We therefore ask Carmarthenshire voters to vote against the Labour Party in May’s Assembly elections because they are not listening to the opinions of the electorate, and are undermining our communities through their New Labour policies.""Cymdeithas yr Iaith will clearly show our opposition on the Urdd National Eisteddfod field at Carmarthen at the end of May."
