Members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg targeted targeted Tesco and Morrison stores through out Wales last night, covering them with stickers calling for a New Welsh Language Act. The stores targeted were in Bangor, Caernarfon, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen, Swansea and Cardiff (Grangetown and 2 stores on Cowbridge Road). A slogan was painted on the wall of the Morrison store in Caernarfon.
This is part of a campaign against Morrisons and tesco that will continue for the next month, and calling on both to adopt a comprehensive Welsh language policy. Cymdeithas has prommised furthuer direct action against the two stores unless they show greater commitment to a more progressive bilingual policy.Hywel Griffiths, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"Both Tesco and Morrisons must realise that they have to show respect for the Welsh language. Since the government of Wales has not as yet committed itself to a Welsh language Act that has powers extending to the private sector, these companies must be reminded of their obligation to their Welsh-speaking customers who contribute towards their extravegant annual proffits."Over the next year various leading chain stores will be targeted by Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg over the next year to emphasise the need for a New Welsh Language Act.
