Cymdeithas yr Iaith meet with MP Mark Williams regarding S4C

cwrdd-gyda-mark-williams.jpgMembers of Cymdeithas Yr Iaith in Ceredigion have expressed their dissapointment following a meeting with MP Mark Williams on Tuesday the 28th of September, because they failed to receive an unconditional promise from him that he would vote against any cuts to S4C's budget. They will now keep in contact with the MP and contact him following the spending review on the 20th of October, in accordance with his wish, to ask him again to sign such a promise.Siriol Teifi, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith in Ceredigion said:"We look to people like Mark Williams to make a stand for the Welsh Language. If a man such as Mark Williams is not prepared to do so there is not much hope for the channel. We will therefore continue to put pressure on our MP to commit himself to voting against any cuts to S4C's budget. This unique channel is a rare and all-important investment in our language and local area."There is now written evidence that the Tory-Liberal Democrat government in London is discussing to cut the budget of the only television channel available in the Welsh language, possibly by up to 25% to 40%. The UK government is not seeking similar cuts to the funding of any other broadcasters. With several independent television companies in Ceredigion, such as Wes Glei in Felinfach and the Pixel Foundary in Aberystwyth, highly valued jobs could be lost to the county.
