It has come to Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg's (The Welsh Language Society) attention that an employee of Morrisons in Holyhead was prevented from speaking in Welsh with his colleagues by the shop's manager.Mr David Evans, an employee of Morrisons, was warned on several occasions not to speak in Welsh with his colleagues. Yesterday, Mr. Evans walked out of his job because he could not tolerate the situation any further.Osian Jones, Cymdeithas yr Iaith's North Wales Officer, said:"It is unfair and unjust that Mr David Evans was stopped by his Manager to speak Welsh in the workplace. Morrisons have been named as a company who has good will towards the Welsh language, but they can't even give their employee's the right to speak Welsh together. Without linguistic rights, Mr David Evans hasn't any legal ground to argue he has a right to speak Welsh in the workplace."
The Welsh Language Legislative Competence Order (LCO), which will transfer powers over the Welsh language from Westminster to the Assembly, contains the 'freedom to speak Welsh in the workplace'.Osian Jones said further:"The Order needs to be strengthened to contain 'the right to work through the medium of Welsh' because the 'freedom to speak' is not strong enough to provide rights for people like Mr David Evans. This case re-enforces the need for a broad Legislative Competence Order which will include linguistic rights across every sector so that the Assembly is not prevented from passing a measure which will create more equality for the people of Wales who want to use the Welsh language."On May 16th at 2pm, Cymdeithas yr Iaith will hold a Rally calling for all the powers over the Welsh language to be transferred from Westminster to the Assembly. The speakers will be Adam Price MP, Angharad Mair (Wedi 7), Hywel Teifi Edwards, Catrin Dafydd (author).Daily Post
