gweithred-llundain2-bach.jpgMembers of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg have painted the slogan 'ACHUB S4C' (Save S4C) on the buildings of the BBC in White City, London to show their concern for the future of S4C the Welsh language television channel. Bethan Williams Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg from Eglwyswrw and Chris Griffiths from Blaendulais were arrested this morning.Last autumn the BBC agreed to take over the funding for S4C as part of a deal which would lead to a serious cut back of over 40% to the channel's budget in real terms. The direct grant to the channel will be cut back by 94% over the next four years.Bethan Williams chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"We have been campaigning to secure a future for S4C over the last few months. This has been a popular campaign which has won the support of a wide range of people. Nobody agrees with the plans hatched by the BBC and the government. They have been opposed by the leaders of the political parties in Wales, numerous Trade Unions and Welsh Language organisations, the Welsh Select Committee in the House of Commons: tens of thousands of people have attended have signed petitions, attended rallies and meetings. The campaign has also been suported by Barry Morgan, Archbishop of Wales. Even the Culture Committee in the House of Commons has condemned the plans."The British government are attempting to change the rules through the Public Bodies Bill which would abolish the present statuary funding formula which means that S4C has no security of funding after 2015: it also means that the government can amalgamate the BBC and S4C.Bethan Williams continued:"We have continuously called on the government and the BBC to discontinue their deliberations on the Channel so that a new review may be conducted into the situation. Rather than rushing into last minute decisions without consulting fully with the Welsh people. The authorities have not been listening therefore we have brought the message here to London so that they have no doubts whatsoever that the people of Wales are very concerned about the future of the only Welsh language channel in the world..""We have thought long and hard before taking this direct action and we wish to demonstrate to everyone our concern about the future of our channel, and that we will not be fooled by the fine words of the people in authority."
