Gigs will be part of community campaigns - says Cymdeithas yr Iaith ahead of Eisteddfod

logo-gigs-wrecsam-2011.jpgDuring the year in which Cymdeithas yr Iaith has pledged itself to campaign for the future of local communities in Wales (Tynged yr Iaith 2 - the update of the speech which created the Society), it has been announced that the Cymdeithas gigs during the week of the Wrexham National Eisteddfod will form part of community campaigns in conjunction with a number of local groups. The gigs will be held at one of Wales' leading Music Venues - the Central Station - with tickets on sale in May.Cymdeithas organiser in the north, Osian Jones, said that everyone was feeling "very excited" about these pioneering gigs which would be promoting community action. He commented"It's great that these gigs will be major events held in one of the best Music Venues in Wales in the centre of Wrexham, and its brilliant to see many local community groups getting involved. We're delighted that a young local band "Mother of 6" will be playing the final Saturday night gig at the Eisteddfod and that they are busy rehearsing a set in Welsh for the occasion. The gig will be held jointly with the local community group "Deffro'r Ddraig"."Other highlights of the weeklong Eisteddfod gigs at the Central Station include -

  • Monday 1st Aug - Night of Comedy and Political satire rounded off by a set from Dr Hywel Ffiaidd (the actor/singer from Rhos, Dyfed Tomos)
  • Tuesday 2 Aug - Gig to launch the Charter "Fate of the Language - the Future of our Communities" with Bryn Fon and the band, Al Lewis, Daniel Lloyd etc
  • Wednesday 3rd Aug - Gig to Proclaim 2012 as the year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of setting up Cymdeithas yr Iaith. Veteran DJ Mici Plwm presents 50 years of campaigning and rock music in sound anf film. Among the special guests performing will be Maffia Mr Huws and Heather Jones.
  • Thursday 4th Aug - Gig against the Government Cuts, supported by a number of Unions and local activists. Llwybr Llaethog, Dai Cefn, Crash Disgo and others will be driving the Electronic Train that night !
  • Friday 5th - Gig for International Peace headlined by Meic Stevens and the Band. Title of the gig is "Yr Eryr a'r Golomen" (The Eagle and the Dove) which was Meic's first single released in the 60s as an anti-Vietnam-War song. There will be a minute's silence at midnight to remember Hiroshima Day, and this year we shall also be remembering those in Japan who have suffered as a result of the earthquake/tsunami. Support of local Peace Groups.

A member of Cymdeithas's local organising committee, Ieuan Roberts, added"Our local communities and national institutions such as S4C have come under renewed threat this year from a hostile Westminster Government. So Cymdeithas have decided that all our activities this year during the Eisteddfod week - including the gigs - must respond to this threat. Under this Government we are going back to the 1960s and 1970s when we had to campaign day in and day out for the language and for our communities. Today, as then, we shall stand together."There is no official partnership this year with the Eisteddfod as our gigs are political in nature, but Cymdeithas wish the Maes B and Maes C gigs well and continue to act in a spirit of partnership by targeting different audiences and those in the community who might not otherwise attend a Welsh-language gig. Cymdeithas are willing to co-operate with the Eisteddfod on any future projects. The Cymdeithas gigs will offer Eisteddfodwyr a great chance to experience the facilities at one of Wales' top Music Venues which was created as part of the redevelopment of Wrexham central station and Town Centre.
