Two members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, Osian Jones and Steffan Cravos received fines and costs totalling £750 each following their appearance before Pwllheli Magistrates this afternoon.
Both were found guilty of causing criminal damage to shops belonging to Boots and Superdrug in Llangefni, Bangor, Caernarfon and Porthmadog last June. They had painted slogans on these shops calling for justice for the Welsh language as part of a Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg campaign for a New Welsh language Act.Both defendants said that they had no intention to pay the fines until a New Welsh Language Act with powers extending to the private sector was passed by the Welsh Assembly Government.The next step in Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg's campaign for a New WelshLanguage Act will be a national Rally held at the Morlan Centre,Aberystwyth on Saturday October 25th.
