Language campaigners have criticised the Labour party in Carmarthenshire after an Assembly candidate sent out an official election leaflet written mainly in English.Despite the highest number of Welsh speakers in Wales living in the county, less than 15% of the words used on the leaflet - distributed in the name of Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Labour candidate Anthony Jones - were in Welsh according to those who received it.The Carmarthenshire spokesperson for Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, Sioned Elin, has written to the head of the Labour party in Wales, after receiving the complaints from local members. The letter says:"A number of our members have received a leaflet from your local candidate, Anthony Jones, which is written mainly in English and gives English far more prominence.""The future of Welsh as a living community language is under great threat, and there is a need for every organisation - whether voluntary, public or private - to make every effort to reverse the decline in the Welsh language in our communities. According to experts, the community status of a language is an important influence on local use of Welsh. So, one of the dangers of treating the language in this second rate way on a Carmarthenshire leaflet is, not only that it angers the public, but that it also contributes to reducing the use of the language in our communities and the serious decline in the number of Welsh speaking communities in west Wales.""What is the policy of your party regarding the use of the Welsh language on leaflets, especially in Welsh speaking areas? Is it the policy of your party to treat Welsh as a second rate language like on this leaflet?"Labour leaflet in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr (PDF)
