The first stage a week today of Cymdeithas yr Iaith’s March for Village Schools will take campaigners from Ysgol y Parc (one of the first schools on the Council’s hit-list) to the Tryweryn Chapel of Remembrance lakeside at Llyn Celyn. A brief meeting will be held at the Chapel to remember the loss of Tryweryn and of dedication to fight against the loss of further Welsh-speaking communities through the loss of Village Schools.
The marchers will be led on this first stage by Cymdeithas Organiser in the North, Osian Jones who said “The loss of a school such as Parc would be a suspended death sentence for the local Welsh-speaking community. The community would age and lose its vitality as young people would be far less likely to live in a community without a school and there would be no focus for young life. Half a century ago we lost a Welsh-speaking community when we lost Tryweryn. We would lose many more if Gwynedd’s current plans are implemented. Losing Tryweryn was demoralising, but remembering Tryweryn fills us with determination to ensure that we don’t lose further Welsh-speaking communities.”One of the most popular singers in Wales, Heather Jones, will be supporting the campaign by singing her famous song “Colli Iaith, Colli Cymdeithas”(“Losing a Language, Losing a Community” which refers to Tryweryn) at the Remembrance Chapel and then holding a concert at 7pm that evening with local children at Ysgol y Parc.
