Members present draft Welsh language legislation

senedd-rhodri-bach.jpgOn Wednesday the 29th of November Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg will present a draft Welsh language measure to the political parties in Cardiff Bay. In a meeting, co-sponsored by Plaid Cymru, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith will launch the draft measure, and will call on the parties to ensure their commitment to the need for a new Welsh Language Act or measure. They will also call for the Assembly to implement a Welsh language measure in the new term following the election.

Catrin Dafydd, Chair of Cymdeithas’ New Welsh Language Act Group, said:"Presenting this draft measure to the political parties in Cardiff is a symbolic and significant move. We are inviting comments on the draft and are asking the three parties to show further commitment to the need for new legislation. The Presiding Officer of the Assembly has challenged voluntary organisations to create new measures. A measure on the Welsh language should be one of the first to be considered when the Assembly receives its new powers. The fact that the leaders of all three opposition parties have stated that they will attend this lobby is indicative of the importance of the discussion."She added:"On the same day, members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith will also present the draft measure to the Assembly’s Presiding Officer Dafydd Elis Thomas in a special meeting. In addition to the measure, Cymdeithas yr Iaith aim to present a petition signed by thousands in the new year. By now a consensus has been established regarding the need for new Welsh language legislation, in order to establish official status, specific rights to use the language and a Commissioner for the language. The challenge now is to develop the discussion regarding the details of a language measure."Notes:The meeting will be held in Crickhowell House at 12.30 p.m in Conference Room 24.Ieuan Wyn Jones AM, Eleanor Burnham AM and Lisa Francis AM will be amongst the speakers.
