Cymdeithas yr Iaith has welcomed the appointment of Eluned Morgan AM as the new Minister with responsibility for the Welsh language.
Responding to the news, Osian Rhys from Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg commented:
"We welcome this appointment. Eluned Morgan now needs to make sure that real work goes into reaching the one million Welsh speakers target which has widespread support across the parties and the country. In order to meet the goal, there needs to be quick progress on replacing Welsh second language with a single qualification for all pupils as well as expanding and normalising Welsh—medium education. The unwise proposals in the recent white paper - to abolish the Welsh Language Commisioner and weaken regulation - need to be dropped. Indeed, it would be far better to fully implement the current law than push ahead with the Government's current damaging ideas. "
