On Saturday, December the 3rd, the direct action campaign by Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg was officially brought to a close. The announcement was made in the Welsh Language Act Rally held in Carmarthen.

During the campaign, 16 members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith were arrested for painting slogans on the old Welsh Office, Cathays Park. The campaign was aimed at drawing Rhodri Morgan and his government’s attention to the need for a New Comprehensive Welsh Language Act and the need for discussion in the field.According to Catrin Dafydd, leader of the Welsh Language Act Campaign:“The period of direct action against the Labour Government in the Assembly has drawn to a close. Cymdeithas yr Iaith are now concentrating on the need for political discussion amongst societies and political parties. This begins tomorrow when delegates of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg present members of the European Council’s Minority Languages Committee with evidence, strengthening the case for a Welsh Language Act.”Following the rally, Adam Price, Member of Parliament for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr announced:“The arguments against the need for a comprehensive Welsh Language Act are not valid. It is a clear question of civil liberties, so as to ensure that people are permitted to live through the medium of English and Welsh in Wales.Iaith Pawb, the government’s own language strategy sets ambitious targets for language growth but there is no clear policy included in the document about how these targets will be met.
