Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society) has paid tribute to the tens of thousands of people who have forced the Westminster Government to offer a compromise on S4C's future today (Tuesday, July 12).A Westminster Government Minister wil state in a debate on the second reading of the Public Bodies Bill today that an amendment will be tabled concerning the funding of the channel.Language campaigners say they will continue with their campaign, including encouraging individuals to refuse to pay their TV licences until S4C is independent, with sufficient funding and a long term inflation-based funding formula protected in law. The pressure group also pushing for a new S4C, namely a multi-media platfrom which is answerable to people in Wales, with powers over broadcasting devolved to Wales, and assurances that the channel will be in Welsh only.Menna Machreth, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg broadcasting spokesperson said:"We have said since the start of the campaign that we would oppose the cuts to our onl Welsh language TV channel whilst calling for a new S4C. We're grateful that the pressure from tens of the thousands of people in Wales who oppose the plans is starting to pay dividends. All the groups who have supported the campaign and have built a consensus for the Welsh language deserve praise for forcing the Government to reconsider. This should be an encouragement for us as we continue with our campaign to ensure a prosperous future for the channel.""We must wait to see what type of amendment to the bill is tabled by the Government. However, it seems that they have no intention to stop, or reduce the 94% cut that they're planning in their grant to S4C. Even the Welsh Affairs Committee, with a Tory majority, has recognised that the cut is too much. The commitee asked for a long term funding formula in law as well, vague wording won't deliver the formula that's needed to secure the channel for the future.""Certainly, we won't stop our campaign of direct action and refusal to pay the TV licence. On the contrary - we must keep the pressure on the Government to secure sufficient funding in statute and operational and editorial independence for our Welsh language channel. There's a responsibility on our politicians to act urgently to ensure these essential things for the channel."S4C has been forced to make cuts that are are unfair compared with the cuts to other public broadcasters, despite the state of the Welsh language is fragile. In addition, discussions between the BBC and S4C are still carrying on in keeping with the wishes of the British governemnt. Tens of thousands are opposing these plans including the Archbishop of Wales, leaders of the parties in Wales and tens of organisations."
