Language activists have occupied the BBC studios in Aberystwyth and stopped a Radio Cymru broadcast today (Wednesday 16th March) as part of their campaign to stop planned changes to S4C, which they claim endanger the channel's future.Campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society) are calling on the BBC to pull out of the deal they struck with the government over S4C. Instead, they want any changes delayed until the comprehensive review of the channel sought by the four main party leaders in Wales is completed. The Westminster Government plans to cut its grant to S4C 94%, with the BBC agreeing to part fund the channel via the licence fee from 2013/14 meaning a cut of over 40% in real terms to the channel in total.Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg commented:"The future of the world's only Welsh language TV channel hangs in the balance because of these plans. Plans for severe cuts and a BBC takeover of the channel. That's why we're campaigning. The BBC and the Government have created a crisis in Welsh broadcasting: it's their last-minute, back-of-an-envelope deal struck by them that's caused this mess. Mark Thompson [BBC Director General] says that the corporation 'freely agreed' to these plans, but at the moment they're still denyign any responsbility for putting S4C in jeopardy, which is obviously highly misleading."Bethan Williams added:"We are really concerned about the future of S4C under these plans. So, we are taking the message directly to the BBC to demonstrate our concerns. We're asking as many people as possible to support the campaign in any way they can."
