S4C: Cymdeithas members target Minister's Office

davidjones.jpgLanguage campaigners have put posters on Wales Minister David Jones MP's office in Clwyd West tonight (Sunday 27/02/11).The posters which call on David Jones to listen to the people of Wales are part of a national campaign by the Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg who claim the UK Government and the BBC are working together on a plan to get rid of S4C.The leaders of every political party in Wales have called on Jeremy Hunt to halt the current plans for S4C, which would put the channel under the BBC and would cut it's funding by 42% in real terms. The Government's rejection of that united call has angered people in Wales, according to campaigners. Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"The Government in Westminster has not considered the people of Wales' views at all while discussing their plans for S4C. It's totally unacceptable. We are calling on the UK government to listen to the cross-party calls and make sensible and informed decisions on the future of the channel."The channel was founded following a long campaign by the people of Wales, and now the government and the BBC are undermining it."

Cymdeithas yr Iaith fears S4C will lose its independence under the current plans; becoming nothing more than a department of the BBC. One of the protesters said:"Many members [of Cymdeithas yr Iaith] are worried about the future of S4C under the current plans of the government and the BBC. The Conservatives had promised that S4C would be safe in their hands, but David Jones, our member of parliament, has not done anything to secure the future of our only Welsh television channel. We have shown that we care, even though he clearly doesn't."Bethan Williams added:"We have shown the seriousness of the situation tonight and the eagerness of people to act against the threat to our Welsh channel. Our campaign is going from strength to strength; we will continue until the independence of S4C and sufficient funding, protected in statute, is delivered."
