S4C Rally: Save the world's only Welsh TV channel

Over 2,000 people attended a rally in Cardiff today against the proposed cuts to S4C and the plans for the BBC to take over the channel.ralis4c_panorama-bch.jpgPlaid Cymru Leader Ieuan Wyn Jones AM and Labour MP Paul Flynn were speaking at the demonstration which is supported by a number of unions and other organisations. Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society) also called for a 'new S4C', a channel answerable to its audience, which promotes workers' creativity and is a multimedia broadcaster devolved to Wales. The Public Bodies Bill, which allows Ministers in London to abolish S4C and cut its budget, has been criticized in a recent House of Lords report.Speaking at the rally, Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"The channel is a unique investment in the Welsh language, so the government plans are going to directly undermine Welsh as a living language. The news that the Government is trying to pass a law which allows them to abolish S4C completely, confirms our worst fears. They're planning to get rid of the service completely. We are calling for editorial and financial independence for the channel by keeping the present funding formula and forgeting the silly idea of a BBC takeover. Broadcasting needs to be devolved to Wales urgently, instead of undemocratic decisions being made in London. We acknowledge that the channel has weaknesses, that's why we are campaigning for a new S4C, but that won't be possible under these plans. We're encouraging people to come to our rally today in Cardiff to demonstrate their opposition to the plans."
