S4C redundancies

Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has responded to news that S4C is establishing a voluntary redundancy scheme for its staff.Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"This is just the start. The enormous cuts proposed by the Government put the future of S4C as an independent channel in doubt. If things don't change soon, there won't be enough staff left to sustain an independent Welsh language TV service, and the BBC will takeover the channel lock, stock and barrel. That will take us back to the situation before the channel was established where there was a competition for resources between English and Welsh language programming. And, in the end the the whole of society will suffer, as the Welsh language, a unique inheritance for everyone in our country, slowly but surely disappears from our lives."The majority of Welsh MPs, the leaders of the four main parties in Wales, every union and language group, tens of thousands of people who have signed our petition, attended our meetings and rallies oppose these plans - they all say 'No to cuts, Yes to a new S4C'. But, the Government and the BBC are refusing to listen. The people of Wales are not stupid: we know that there is no need to cut the government's grant to the channel 94% because of the deficit - it's a totally unfair cut."
