S4C: Umbrella group launched

Group protest at UK government's 'insult' to Welsh democracyA new umbrella group campaigning to save S4C will be launched today ( 10:30am, Monday 7th March). At the launch, the group - a mix of unions and language campaigners - will criticise the UK government for ignoring the united call from all party leaders in Wales for a full review of the channel. The pressure groups who have formed the alliance, which seeks to establish a new, multi-media S4C, are broadcast union BECTU, the National Union of Journalists, the Writers Guild, Equity, the Musicians Union, and Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg. The campaign groups will launch a policy consultation document outlining their alternative vision.Speaking on behalf of union group, the FEU (Federation ogf Entertainment Unions), David Donovan will say:"The current plans threaten the future of our only Welsh language television channel. We're furious that the UK government has chosen to completely ignore the call from the main party leaders in Wales for a complete review of the channel instead of Jeremy Hunt's last-minute ill-considered plans. There is another away forward for our only Welsh channel which is so important for the language and Welsh culture. That's what we're trying to set out in our consultation document - we need a national discussion about the space for the Welsh language in the media instead of the stupid ideas of the Government in London."Press Here to download the Consultation Document - (PDF)
