Weak Language Act - No Thanks!

Protest Senedd CaerdyddHere is a copy of a letter sent to all Welsh Assembly Members prior to the discussion on a New Welsh Language Act today 27/06/07.Dear Assembly Member,Urgent message from Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg re. discussion in Chamber, June 27th 2007 on official status for the Welsh languageDespite the current political uncertainties we welcome this early crucial discussion on the official status of the Welsh language which we hope will pave the way for a strong Welsh Language Measure.

We believe that with the coming of new Assembly powers, you now have a historic opportunity to provide the Welsh language with a firm new statutory basis for the future. However, we would warn you against any moves to settle for a weak language measure for two reasons; a weak measure would block any worthwhile developments for years to come and would confirm fears that the Assembly does not have the appetite for decisive action as far as the welsh language is concerned. We therefore ask to support a strong and comprehensive Welsh language measure which would include the following three elements;1) that the Welsh language be given official status,2) that a Commissioner for the Welsh Language be established3) that basic rights be secured for everyone in Wales to use the welsh language in all aspects of life. Such rights should operate across the public, private and voluntary sectors; in keeping with recent equality laws in respect of sexuality and disability. With regard to the private sector we recognize the need for an incremental approach; looking to big multi- national companies and chain stores to begin with before setting expectations of smaller businesses who would require sufficient Government support and guidance over time.As a first step, we call for the setting up of a cross part scrutiny committee to discuss the details of a Legislative Competence Order that would incorporate the above three principles. For further details on our proposals, please read our Welsh Language Measure 2007 on our website; www.cymdeithas.orgYours sincerely,Rhun Emlyn (Chair Grwp Deddf iaith Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg)
