Welsh Government's Big Conference - urgent action needed

Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has reacted to the official launch of the Welsh Government's Big Conference about the future of the Welsh language.

Robin Farrar, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg commented: “We have welcomed the fact that the Government is holding this type of conversation, but have said over and over again that the time has come for urgent action rather than just talk. We have presented over thirty detailed recommendations to the First Minster, so that people can live in Welsh. He has promised to respond by the end of next week. However, if the Government hasn't published the planning guidelines, TAN 20, before its conference, it's likely to be difficult to hold a
constructive dialogue. For over two years we have been waiting for new, firmer guidelines but they still haven't been published. As we wait the fate of the language in our communities is suffering because of unnecessary housing developments.”

Cymdeithas yr Iaith will be holding a special general meeting on Saturday 8th June to formally adopt the Maniffesto Byw (Living Manifesto) which will shape the group's response to the Government's Big Conference.
