Representatives from a number of Welsh organisations met on the Urdd Eisteddfod field in Carmarthen last Thursday to discuss ways in which they could co-operate in the campaign for a new Welsh Language Act and how to put further pressure on the Welsh Assembly Government on this matter. The meeting which had been organised jointly by Urdd Gobaith Cymru and Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg was also attended by UCAC, UMCA, UMCB, Rhieni Dros Addysg Gymraeg, Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru, Farmers Union of Wales, Cymuned and Cymdeithas Alawon Gwerin.
Also during the week, Urdd Gobaith Cymru in a press release (pdf) called for a review of the present Welsh Language Act and for it to be strengthened in a way that would make it more relevant to the lives of the people of Wales today. The aim of the organisations at the meeting is to arrange a major event drawing attention to the need for a strengthened Welsh Language Act. There will be another meeting within the month to give the matter further consideration. While the meeting was in progress, Hywel Griffiths, chair of Cymdeithas yr iaith Gymraeg was in the pavilion, recieving the Eisteddfod chair, for an ode attcking political apathy. For the ceremony he wore a Cymdeithas t shirt calling for a New Welsh Language Act. After the meeting Hywel Griffiths said:"Its interesting that while this historical meeting took place on the Urdd Eisteddfod field, Carwyn Jones, the minister with responsibility for the Welsh language released a press release saying that he did not see the need for a New Welsh Language Act. This only goes to show how out of touch Carwyn Jones is with the people of Wales, and it is our belief that he will have to change his view on this matter in the very near future."
