Carmarthen Mayor supports Cymdeithas' Welsh Language Act campaign

Ble mae'r Gymraeg? As part of Cymdeithas yr Iaith's campaign to remind the Assembly Government of the need for strong legislation regarding the Welsh language, Carmarthen Town's Mayor will be filling a complaint form outside Tesco in Carmarthen on Thursday morning the 27th of March at 11am. Cymdeithas yr Iaith will be targeting 2 private sector companies every 2 months from now until the end of the year, focusing on Tesco and Morrisons in the months of March and April.

Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith's Language Act group said:"We'll be targeting those companies that take money from the people of Wales but refuse to provide an equal service in Welsh as well as in English. We're calling on the people of Wales to write a letter of complaint to send to these companies regarding their inadequate and flawed language policy. We shall also be organizing pickets and protests outside Tesco and Morrisons stores over the next couple of months."She added:"We're calling on these large companies to ensure that the following are bilingual: all the permanent signage, seasonal marketing material and temporary signs, tanoy announcements, and own brand packaging. We also call on them to use local produce where possible and to establish training schemes for staff to be able to work and provide a service through the medium of Wales."Angharad Clwyd, Cymdeithas yr Iaith's Dyfed Organiser said:"We'll be distributing leaflets outside Tesco in Carmarthen on Thursday morning asking customers to write to the company to make sure that they're aware of the demand for bilingual services in Wales. Carmarthen Town's Mayor will lead the way by writing a letter of complaint outside the store. We've had discussions with Tesco and Morrisons and it's clear now that unless a Welsh Language Act is put in place to compel the private sector to give equal status to the Welsh Language, we can only expect the usual tokenistic Welsh Language service to continue. We therefore call on the National Assembly of Wales to ensure that any new language legislation includes the private sector."
