In a letter to John Whittingdale, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, regarding possible cuts to S4C's funding, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has said that the Government was 'ignoring' the Welsh language and that they are ‘misunderstanding' the nature of S4C.
The letter comes ahead of the announcement of the Government's Budget, which will include possible cuts to S4C and the BBC, and following John Whittingdale's comments that cuts to S4C would be 'reasonable' - something language activists and organisations within the broadcasting industry have criticised.
In the letter to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport; Aled Powell, Chair of Cymdeithas' Digital Futures group says:
"The channel has suffered cuts of around 40% to its budget already, and the Government has saved 93% of what it previously spent - well beyond what you are considering for the BBC. The comparison is therefore unfair and deceptive."
The letter also criticises the way the government has come to its decision about possible cuts and the financial future of S4C and the BBC:
"We wholly condemn the process that you have used to reach this agreement, without consultation with S4C, the Welsh Government, the National Assembly or the people of Wales.
It confirms once again that the Welsh language is of no importance whatsoever to your Government. In fact, you are treating S4C, and therefore the Welsh language and the Welsh people with contempt. This is not so much a matter of undermining, but of ignoring the language: it seems that the language is totally irrelevant to your government. "
Cymdeithas yr Iaith is calling for a statutory funding formula for S4C, establishing a levy on large companies in order to fund public sector broadcasting, creating a new multiplatform broadcaster and devolving responsibility and finance over broadcasting to Wales.
