As the Annual General Meeting and National Rally arranged by Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg in Aberystwyth next Saturday fifteen of the organisation's members will almost immediately leave on a fact finding trip to the Basque Country. This will be the largest ever deputation of Cymdeithas members to go on such a trip and it will be the organisations first official visit to the Basque Country in 15 years.
During the week long visit that starts on October 27th the deputation will meet a great variety of language pressure groups, companies and co-operatives that promote the Basque language in the work place, schools that teach through the medium of Basque. We shall also be visiting areas of the country to see how the linguistic situation varies from area to area. We shall also see how one County Council has dealt successfully with in migration from Spain.Sioned Haf, Campaigns officer for Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg and the organiser of the deputation said:"This week long visit has great significance since a Language Act recently passed in the Basque Country is of great relevance to us in Wales since it addresses private businesses and companies and we wish to see similar legislation here. Also, in many ways the linguistic situation in both countries is very much alike, although it has to be admitted that the Basque Country is far ahead of us in this field. But we hope to learn a great deal before we take part in a planned meeting with the CBI which is to be arranged after our return."
