Between 1 and 2 o'clock today (Friday 15/06/07) Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg will stage a demonstration outside the premises of Thomas Cook in Bangor because of that company's policy of denying its workers the right to speak Welsh in the work-place. At the same time, smaller protests will be held outside the Thomas Cook shop in Queen Street, Cardiff and in Carmarthen.
Those attending the demonstration will be invited to sign the following letter:“You are aware by now about the level of opposition there is to your decision to discriminiate against Welsh speakers who have been denied the right to speak their own language when doing their work. We call on you to say one small word in your own language – SORRY – to your staff, and to the local community, for the disrespect you have shown.""We should also like to add that you have also practically banned the Welsh language from all your publications, advertisements and website. We therefore call on you to make a full and comprehensive use of the Welsh language in all your business. Otherwise we will have to presume that you intend to uphold your anti Welsh policy until a New Welsh Language Act forces you to change your mind. If that is the case then we shall be calling on all our friends and associates not to do business with you.”Not only will demonstrators be invited to sign this letter but those in Bangor will wear the Welsh NOT sign around their necks since the anti Welsh policy adopted by Thomas Cook is a reminder of those days when children were forced to wear the Welsh Not in Schools for speaking Welsh.Poster Thomas Cook (PDF) - Taflen Thomas Cook (PDF)
