Language activists have committed themselves to continue the campaign for Welsh language broadcasting after an attempt to save S4C failed by one vote at the Public Bodies Bill Committee in the House of Commons today.Disappointment was expressed because of the decision made by Glyn Davies MP (Conservative, Montgomeryshire) and Stephen Crabb (Conservative, Preseli Pembrokeshire) because of their failure to respect the views of fellow Conservative MP's who criticised the cut backs and changes to S4C in a cross party report earlier this year.Although a majority of Welsh MP's on the committee today voted in favour of withdrawing S4C from the Public Bodies Bill, the attempt failed narrowly because there was a majority of English MP's on the committee.Bethan Williams speaking on behalf of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"Even though there is a wide consensus in Wales against government plans for S4C the votes of MP's from England those plans will now be implemented because of the votes of English MP's. The British democratic process has betrayed the people of Wales.""We must however continue with the campaign to secure a future for a Welsh language channel despite the rushed plans of the government which will mean a 94% reduction in government funding for S4C and a loss of independence, since it will now come under the control of the BBC.""We have campaigned for a new S4C from the start. It is now a the responsibility of the channel and those who work for it to stand and fight for their own future."Following the vote Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg was led out of the committee room shouting (in Welsh) "This vote is an insult to the people of Wales." She is currently being questioned by the police.
