First Minister and language activist face to face

Gwenno Teifi a Rhodri MorganWhen First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, attends a Labour Party meeting at Penparcau Memorial Hall tomorrow night he will come face to face with Gwenno Teifi who was imprisoned last week for refusing to pay a £200 fine arising from the Society’s campaign for a New Welsh Language Act.

Gwenno Teifi along with other members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith branch at Neuadd Pantycelyn Aberystwyth intend to present a letter to Rhodri Morgan. Gwenno Teifi said,"I, along with other members of Cymdeithas from Neuadd Pantycelyn, intend to present the First Minister with a letter inviting him to a lobby Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg will be holding at the National Assembly on March 22nd. The lobby will be concerned with the need for a New Welsh Language Act. Our hope is that Rhodri Morgan will accept the invitation and attend the lobby since he did give a promise, in the Houses of Parliament back in 1993 that when he was next in government he would take the opportunity to strengthen Welsh language legislation.""Since last Christmas have postponed their direct action campaign against the Welsh Assembly Government in the hope that the truce would give the government ample time to consider the need to introduce a stronger Welsh Language Act in the near future."
