Flock to Wrexham for Cymdeithas gigs - Gruff Rhys

separado.jpgPop star Gruff Rhys is giving Eisteddfod-goers a chance to see his Patagonian adventure film when the festival comes to Wrexham this summer.Separado! is a personal journey for Gruff Rhys, who has managed to place Patagonia in the wider cultural context of Argentina, and therefore breaks away from the usual romantic approach to filming the Welsh in Patagonia. The film will be shown in Central Station, Wrexham on Sunday 31st July, bore the star himself, Rene Griffiths, sing some of his unique blend of South American and Welsh sounds.Tickets for the evening are on sale for £6 each online from cymdeithas.org/steddfod and in person from Yales Cafe Wrexham, Awen Meirion, Bala, Elfair Rhuthun, and from Cymdeithas office in Caernarfon, Aberystwyth and Cardiff.Gruff Rhys, a pop singer who's released several solo hits along with albums as the Super Furry Animals' frontman said:"Separado took five years to complete. The idea was to attempt to present a balanced political, visual and musical image of the Latin-Welsh in Patagonia. Without a doubt, Rene Griffiths' permanent enigma glues the whole thing together, and he's the musical highlight.""Listen carefully to his songs and his ingenious strumming. Here's a unique, witty and other-worldly man. Come to enjoy his amazing guitar talents, without hearing it first hand you'll never believe it!"Nia Lloyd, co-ordinator of the local organising committee of the Cymdeithas yr Iaith gigs added:"The whole purpose of our gigs in this year's Eisteddfod is to help the campaign to defend our local communities - both rural and here in Wrexham - against the attacks by the new Tory government in Westminster. So it's appropriate that we start the week by looking at the effort to create a Welsh language community in Patagonia, and we're especially thrilled that Rene Griffiths himself is coming to sing on the night."
