Welsh language campaigners have welcomed the comments of Lord Geoffrey Howe - Deputy Prime Minister, Chancellor and Foreign Secretary under Thatcher - who has spoken against the Government's plans for over 40% cuts to S4C and a BBC takeover of the channel.Lord Howe was speaking in the debate on the Public Bodies Bill today which would allow the plans to go through. He said the plans would be "politically unwise and disastrous for the institution".Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"The Government can't even secure the support of Thatcher's right-hand man Lord Howe, it's increasingly obvious that they haven't got a clue. The Government-BBC plans are ill-considered and ignore the united voices of all political parties in Wales. They're downright stupid. If they don't stop their plans now, they can expect a fierce response from the people of Wales."
