Campaigners will call for 'radical changes' to the planning system at a protest against a housing development in north Wales tomorrow (Saturday, July 2).Campaigners are opposing a plan to build two thousand new properties in Bodelwyddan village in Denbighshire, a plan which would treble the size of the village near the A55.The protest, outside county hall in Rhuthun, has been jointly organised by Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Society) and the Bodelwyddan Action Group.Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg argue that the proposed development at Bodelwyddan is an example of a wider problem with the planning system, which put developers interests ahead of local need.Commenting ahead of the rally, Hywel Griffiths communities spokesperson for language campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"Making a profit is the main aim of an American company's Bodelwyddan housing plan. It would treble the size of the village, not serve the community. Out Welsh language communities are at risk of disappearing forever partly because of plans like this. Developments like this for commuters once again demonstrate the major flaws in the planning process. A system which puts the needs of developers first, instead of the needs of the community.""We, in Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, have a vision for sustainable communities in every sense of the word. We need to move away from a system that encourages people to commute a long way for work. We want to create communities which are sustainable economically, environmentally and linguistically. That means a revolution in our approach. A housing revolution like that would not please developers, but it's the best thing for our society."Llyr Huws Gruffydd, Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for North Wales added:"Bodelwyddan is the worst of a large number of examples of over-development across the North. There's an intention to build 200 new houses in Llanfairfechan, 800 in Abergele and 140 in Penyffordd. Across the length and breadth of the North, theWelsh Government is trying to force more and more houses on our local councils. There is no local need for these houses...""So rather than planning for sustainable communities the Welsh Government is trying to promote large commuter estates along the A55. Enough is enough - we're not going to accept more. We need to unite the different local campaigns into one strong campaign which will express a clear opinion to Government politicians and civil servants."
