Two Welsh language campaigners have broken into and painted a slogan at a Tory MP and AM's Office in Cardiff during their party conference today (Sunday 6th March). Heledd Melangell Williams (from Nant Peris) and Jamie Bevan (from Merthyr) are now being questioned at a police station in Cardiff Bay. The protesters informed the police of the non-violent direct action, and both take full responsibility for their actions. The protest is part of a national campaign by the group who claims that the Government and BBC's plans for Welsh language channel S4C put its future in jeopardy, and follows a long period of campaigning and lobbying by the Welsh Language Society, including a large rally with over 2,000 attending before Christmas, dozens of meetings have been arranged up and down the contry, thousands upon thousands of names have been collected on a petition objecting to the S4C cuts, and countless letters have been sent to Welsh MPs urging them to ensure a prosperous future for S4C.Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"The Government has ignored the call by the leaders of every party in Wales to halt the current plans for S4C, which would mean a BBC takeover and would cut the channel's funding by 42% in real terms.""The Government in Westminster has not considered the views of people in Wales while discussing their plans for S4C at all during the process, which is totally unacceptable. We are calling on the Government to listen to the calls of our political parties in order to make sensible and informed decisions on the future of the channel.""The channel was founded following a long struggle by the people of Wales and now the government and the BBC are undermining this."Cymdeithas yr Iaith fear that S4C will lose its independence under the current plans and that it will become nothing more than a department of the BBC.Bethan Williams added:"We have shown the seriousness of the situation today and the eagerness of people to fight against the threat to our Welsh channel. Our campaign is going from strength to strength and we will continue until we get certainty of independence for S4C and sufficient funding in statute to allow this."The direct action follows a long period of campaigning and lobbying by the Welsh Language Society, including a large rally with over 2,000 attending before Christmas, dozens of meetings have been arranged up and down the contry, thousands upon thousands of names have been collected on a petition objecting to the S4C cuts, and countless letters have been sent to Welsh MPs urging them to ensure a prosperous future for S4C.
