In response to Alun Davies' comments on the Welsh Langugae Standards, Manon Elin, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith's language rights group, said:
"The Minister for the Welsh Language has said he wants to build on the Standards system, and we welcome that. What is more, we see it is necessary to strengthen the Welsh Language Measure to include the private sector, and to include the unquestionable right to use the language in every aspect of life on the face of the bill – which would put flesh on the bones of the existing Standards system.

"It is timely to review the Welsh Language Measure with a view to strengthening it, due to changes in the Welsh legislative context. Since the process of creating the 2011 Measure, the powers to ensure a stong Language Measure, in line with the aspirations and ambitions of the people of Wales and our representatives, lie in Cardiff Bay, not with politicians in London.

We have put together our own document, which recommends how to strengthen the Measure, and have received feedback from experts and people with experience in the field on its proposals. In our paper, we outline how the Bill should be strengthened for the benefit of the people of Wales and to increase the use of the langauge, not for the benefit of beaurocrats and big companies that disregard their responsibilty in terms of the Welsh language.”
